IND vs NZ 1st T20I highlights: Abhishek Sharma stars as India bags a MASSIVE 48-run win in Nagpur
After a disappointing loss in the ODI series, India made a solid comeback and started the T20I series on a high note. They beat New Zealand by 48 runs in the series opener at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Wednesday. Asked to bat, India piled up a gigantic total of 238 for seven, and then restricted New Zealand to 190 for seven.
India didn’t have the kind of start they would have wanted as Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, who were on a comeback, fell early, leaving the team at 27 for two. However, what followed after that was absolute mayhem, courtesy of Abhishek Sharma (84).
The opening batter was all over the New Zealand bowlers and hit them all over the park. He got great support from captain Suryakumar Yadav (32) as the two together added 99 runs for the third wicket. Hardik Pandya (25) chipped in as well, but the finish by Rinku Singh (44*) powered India to 238 for seven.
New Zealand fails to chase, fell short by 48 runs
New Zealand were jolted early in the chase as Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya removed Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra in the first two overs. Glenn Phillips (78) then stepped up when the team was struggling. He first stitched a 51-run stand with Tim Robinson (21) and then Mark Chapman (39) also played his part.
The Phillips-Chapman duo added 79 runs together, but that wasn’t enough. India kept taking wickets at regular intervals as New Zealand succumbed to pressure. Daryl Mitchell (28) and Mitchell Santner (20*) played decent hands down the order. New Zealand managed 190 for seven, losing by 48 runs.
